Psssst…. I’m taking a seminar here on campus called Learning from the Learners. It’s a great way for us (teachers) to get to hear what you (students) have to say.

Please join your instructor, fellow students, and other LCC faculty for a discussion about teaching and learning. This occasion of sharing and learning will be on Tuesday, March 20, 2007 from 2 PM to approximately 3:30 PM in TLC 326.

During our time together, faculty will ask questions they have prepared in advance. You will have the option to “pass” if you prefer not to answer a question. The following are examples of the types of questions often asked:

• What teaching method(s) do you prefer? (i.e. lectures, group work, worksheets, etc.)
• Do you feel it is a disruption to the class when students arrive late and how would you like the instructor to address chronic tardiness?

In appreciation of your time and input, we will serve a dessert during this session and you will receive a $15.00 gift certificate from Best Buy. Please feel free to call Tracy Price at 483-1427 if you have any questions or concerns regarding this session.

PDF of the letter is here.

MacBook Pro Takes a Cap for its Owner, Still Boots Up

Bullet%20Mac.jpg
Can’t afford to splurge on a Halliburton case for your shiny MacBook Pro? Turns out you may not have to. This Brasilian MacBook Pro over here took a bullet that was intended for its owner over the weekend during a mugging gone wrong and surprisingly, it still worked after being shot. So either that was a crap gun they used or the MacBook Pro is one tough lappie that doesn’t need babying.

Mac OS X Hints: Force a cached Web page to reload

Have a stubborn Web page that seemingly won’t refresh? Try these tricks to force its hand.

The brute force solution is to simply empty your browser’s cache. In Safari and Camino, you can use Command-Option-E to quickly empty the cache; in Firefox, choose Tools -> Clear Private Data. But this is a bit excessive—your browser will then have to re-cache every page you visit, when really, all you wanted to do was clear one page’s cache.

Ditch Your Computer for One Day? Really?

Could you stand to be without your computer, just for one day? Experimenters Denis Bystrov and Michael Taylor want to know. The 24-hour period in question is March 24, which happens to fall on a Saturday. Maybe we’ll try it.

Be a part of one of the biggest global experiments ever to take place on the internet. The idea behind the experiment is to find out how many people can go without a computer for one whole day, and what will happen if we all participate!

Hey, this is like that “turn off your TV” day. But wait. That’s not too good for traffic here at the Giz. Forget it. This is the stupidest idea ever!

U.S. residential broadband penetration is expected to exceed 50 percent in 2007–and the U.K. isn’t far behind. By the end of 2007, more than 60 million U.S. households will be connected–around 55 percent–according to market researcher Parks Associates. During 2006, broadband subscriptions grew by more than 20 percent in the U.S. and by the end of the year around 50 million households had fat pipes.

Turbomolecular Vacuum Turbo Pump

5D11500D_th.jpgSo, I’m sitting in my home office going hungry wondering where my wife is and trying to forget the hunger pangs by browsing eBay and I stumble on a turbomolecular vacuum turbo pump. Now, I’m not an expert in turbomelecularization but a turbomolecular vacuum turbo pump sure sounds like just the thing I need. The asking price is $6,000 which may be a very good price for a turbomolecular vacuum turbo pump of this size but it’s $6,000 I don’t have for a turbomolecular vacuum turbo pump of any size.
